Homework

  1. Why can't you help me with my homework?
We'll be happy to help you solve your problem, but we won't solve it for you. ##java is not a charity. You're in the company of several Java professionals there, and would like to welcome you among them. We aren't helping you become a Java professional if we do your homework for you.
  2. I understand; but I still have a question. How should I ask it?
You'll almost always get an answer if you ask your question in the form: I tried X, expected result Y, got Z instead. My code is in the pastebin. What could be wrong with it?
  3. What are examples of bad questions?
Most of these questions will get you a snarky answer or no answer at all:
    • Who uses X? - ask your real question instead. If someone knows, they'll answer.
    • Can you show me exactly how to do X? - no, we can't. Your teacher asked you to figure that out. That's your job.
    • Where can I learn about X? - Google, API docs, and the Java Tutorial are your friends. Look it up first. The more research you do, the clearer your question will be.
